This picture book also illustrates the struggle so many have in their quest to find a place where they feel truly safe and secure. Follow the journey of Bacon, a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, as he moves into his new forever home. Young readers will love following this sweet boy as he navigates everything from his parents’ laps to crowded animal spaces in his ultimate quest to find the perfect sleeping spot. Ultimately, the story reinforces the idea that belonging is about finding a place where you feel at home, fit in, and are at peace.
Bacon's Comfy Wumfy Sleepy Spot! is designed as an interactive adventure that allows young readers to play an active role in the adventure as opposed to simply listening passively, as in traditional bedtime story books. Each page has an additional activity (the hidden heart hunt) where children can play a side-level game and participate in reading while at the same time searching for a treasure map. The use of rhythmic sing-song phrases, as well as the catchy “Diddy” songs, balances the energetic fun with a gradual calming phase. Tina Neely creates an engaging bedtime routine by making rest an activity where children’s minds are already engaged until they fall asleep. Lastly, the book is not only a bedtime ritual, but one that allows children to feel safe, loved, and ready to sleep peacefully.
