Bandit is a colorful, lively puppy. He loves to play; he loves to snooze; for him, “life is good.” Then, one day, Bandit is adopted by Uncle Bill and Bandit’s adventure begins. The young reader is led on a bumpy journey until Bandit finds his forever home. Settling into his new home, Bandit learns that, once again, “life is good.”
J.A. Hall’s picture book story, Bandit Finds a Home, is a sweet, compassionate story about an adorable puppy who has a lot to learn as he waits to find his fur-ever home. Told in first-person narrative, the author begins with a descriptive passage that uses lots of adjectives – a great way to teach young readers the power of the written word and how words can thoroughly describe what pictures portray. The author then allows Bandit to explain how he got his name and some of the things he enjoys doing, like playing with his siblings. With more descriptive words – both adjectives and adverbs – the author leads the reader on Bandit’s adventures, which include a bumpy truck ride, being bumped out of the truck, and being left alone to defend himself against a coyote. Bandit did have some challenging and scary moments in his adventure and the young reader will sense all the feelings this little puppy experiences. I love all the descriptions in this book; it really makes the reader feel part of the story. The reader will thoroughly relate to Bandit’s sense of life. An endearing story that will appeal to both the young and the young at heart.
