Homes by Hayden Thompson follows Dr. George Harrington over more than two decades as an epidemiologist who leaves his comfortable life in France for public health assignments across Asia. Being a single father means George has to balance demanding fieldwork with raising his twelve-year-old son, Hugo, through huge cultural changes. The story charts the space that grows between father and son, particularly when Hugo moves to London for college, leaving George to spend years alone in stressful environments. Along the way, George battles tropical disease outbreaks and feels cut off from his peers, all while carrying the silent grief of being separated from his family when losing loved ones. In George’s case, can a man who heals the world find a way to fix his own sense of loneliness?
Hayden Thompson’s novel, Homes, is a thoughtful work of literary fiction that does a fantastic job of exploring the importance of human connections. For example, the friendship between George and another coworker (Samuel) adds a lovely warmth to the story, showing readers how crucial good friends are in an expat lifestyle. The settings feel very alive, easily pulling you into international campuses, stressful bureaucratic offices, and the comforting energy found in European cafes. The dialogue is crisp and meaningful, skipping unnecessary sentimentality while still letting you feel how strongly the characters are motivated by love and a sense of duty. It’s a nice reminder of the power of human resilience, showing that the relationships we invest in continue to shape who we are, no matter how many times we change our home. Very highly recommended.
