Beached is written by Karen Weaver. After having her heart broken by her former betrothed-to-be, Hugh, Cara packs her bags and uses her recent winnings in the lottery to try to conquer her fear of flying. With Australia as her destination, she leaves Ireland and makes her way to her Aunt Helen’s home in Rockingham, WA, to escape her heartache and start again. After three chance encounters with a green-eyed Aussie, Curtis, within the space of eight hours, Cara questions if there is a reason she keeps meeting him. A shared kiss in the elevator that night on their way to dinner at a café leads to Cara thinking about Curtis constantly, while telling herself that she cannot get involved with anybody when she is on the rebound. After Curtis promises Cara an incredible adventure at the beach, she quickly realizes that she is in over her head...
From the very first page, Beached had me hooked. Not only that, but it did one thing that no other book has been able to do and that is to make me homesick for Australia. Karen Weaver’s ability to weave words with such artistic prowess is endless. She has captured the essence of Australian living and language so eloquently, as well as including Australia’s beautiful and unique fauna. Although Beached was a short story, the volume of the words was immense and had me smiling many times. Cara was very easy to connect with, as was Curtis. Hugh’s actions, both at the beginning and the end of the book were reprehensible. I recommend this book to all adults and hope to read much more from Karen Weaver in the future. Great job!
