Beastie written by Rachelle Jones Smith and illustrated by Georgiana Grigoras is about the dangers of having a sleepless night. Kioni's mother tells her that if she does not sleep on time, she will turn into a beast the next morning. Unfortunately, Kioni does not follow her mother's advice. Instead, she reads a book with a torch and convinces herself that she is not tired. When she finishes reading, Kioni has a tea party with one of her dolls. Later, she gets into bed and tries to count sheep, but there is only one sheep, and he is dancing. Kioni thinks about the things she did during the day, but this does not work either. She hears her stomach rumble and tiptoes to the kitchen for a snack. After an eventful night, Kioni finally falls asleep. When morning comes, and she looks at her reflection in the mirror, she cannot believe what she sees. Find out what Kioni sees and how her night adventures affect her day by reading Beastie.
Beastie is one of the best bedtime storybooks I have ever read; I recommend adding it to your child's library. Sleep deprivation is horrible because it can cause you to have a bad day. Little ones and many adults still take this risk and do not realize the effects a lack of sleep has on their health. It is wonderful to read a book that raises awareness about this subject. Beastie by Rachelle Jones Smith is a cautionary tale for kids, but I believe it can also apply to adults. Apart from the amazing story, it also contains beautiful art. I loved the purple theme Grigoras used. I applaud her consistency and colorful depiction of the characters and backgrounds. Read Beastie and learn the importance of having a good night’s sleep.
