Kenitra Dominguez’s Because I Deserve It is a health memoir about learning to speak up after a chronic illness diagnosis changes her relationship with the medical system. A routine eye appointment leads to a diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension after years of unexplained headaches, leaving her suddenly facing an illness with no known cure. Medication then makes daily life difficult as exhaustion reduces the number of hours she can work. At the same time, experiences inside hospitals make her increasingly aware of how quickly assumptions can affect the treatment Black women receive. Finding the right specialist begins to change what living with IIH looks like, as she starts asking more from the doctors around her. From there, speaking up becomes part of learning how to live with an illness that has permanently changed what she expects from her body.
Kenitra Dominguez’s Because I Deserve It is a fantastic health memoir, and a useful book for readers who want practical advice for speaking up in medical settings. The writing is direct, and I love that the author gives readers advice through experiences she has actually lived. A twenty-seven-page test report is a perfect example, as she notices a note about a constricted vein near her nasal cavity before asking her doctor if it could be contributing to the pressure in her brain. I also liked the work example involving her clients, where reduced working hours lead her to establish core hours for their projects so they know when she will be available. It's obvious how much professional experience has gone into this, and everything she writes comes back to lived experience. Well-written and full of usable advice, readers living with chronic illness will adore this.
