Being Different Is The New Cool is a children's picture book written by Jacqueline Crann and illustrated by Abira Das. It tells the story of Maddie, a sweet girl with a unique birthmark and a streak of white hair. She often faces bullying because of her distinctive features and sometimes chooses to hide her hair to avoid the teasing. Despite her challenges at school, Maddie loves to dance and takes joy in helping others and bringing smiles to their faces. One day, while in dance class, the hat she wears to cover her hair falls off, and the other kids begin to say hurtful words that affect Maddie deeply. However, her dance teacher, Miss Cherry, steps in to support Maddie. She teaches the class about the importance of celebrating differences and embracing individuality. By the end of the day, Maddie meets a new family member who reminds her of her uniqueness and helps her understand that being different is what makes her special.

Being Different Is The New Cool is an inspiring story that emphasizes kindness and the value of accepting one another's differences. Although Maddie's experience with poliosis—a condition that causes part of a person's hair to be white—is central to the story, the book also highlights other forms of diversity, such as blindness, alopecia, and amputations. This promotes inclusivity and self-acceptance for a variety of individuals. Jacqueline Crann effectively conveys the message of celebrating unique traits instead of hiding them. The illustrations bring the story to life and complement the narrative beautifully. The bright colors add a vibrant and uplifting feel to the book. Additionally, it includes engaging activities like coloring and connect-the-dots that young readers will enjoy. This book is a wonderful read with an important message, making it a great addition to your children's book collection.
