Bellies to the Sky: A Bedtime Breathwork Book by Colleen Canning is a children’s picture book for readers around the 3- to 6-year-old range. It is aimed at bedtime as we see pictures of animals and their offspring getting ready for sleep. It focuses on breathing exercises, relaxing different parts of the body, and slowing down for sleep. It also includes an “animal guide” page, describing the strengths of different animals, and so allowing the young reader to perhaps identify with one of the animals pictured in the book.
This is a marvelous book. First, every page is filled with wonderful, intricate details of different animals and their safe and calm environments, all captured in beautiful watercolors. The scenes are night-time, perfectly blended with text to instill the end of the day mood. Then there are the exercises that are rhythmic in nature with words repeating over and over. The words are choice ones, none wasted, all an important part of the book that both adults and children can do together. The adult animals rest with their young, relaxing together for the night to come, and this works very well to help the young reader to do the same. There are a number of stresses and strains that children go through each and every day, just like adults. Books like these will help them to relax and have a good night’s rest. Bellies to the Sky: A Bedtime Breathwork Book by Colleen Canning is a highly recommended read.
