Beware the Bantam Fighter by David Santiago follows a Puerto Rican family's experiences over the years living on the mainland. With her baby in the stroller, Josephina Burgos walks through the street to confront her son's bullies in the neighborhood. A young Roberto and his father find themselves stranded in the sea after being cursed by a "bruja" in Fajardo. Roberto tells his son about the man who neglected his family duties to fight against corruption, only to put himself in danger. A six-year-old Luna Burgos witnesses Abuela's magical powers and learns not to get into her bad books alongside her brother and cousins. While waiting for the bus at the intersection, Roberto regales his granddaughter, Luna, with the story of how he fought his rival as a young man trying to win the favor of Luna's grandmother.
Beware the Bantam Fighter is a collection of interconnected slice-of-life stories that paint a vibrant portrait of a Puerto Rican family and their experiences on the mainland. These short stories show the close bond shared between family members through different generations and how their culture, heritage, and childhood experiences shape the course of their lives. David Santiago's character work is simply phenomenal. Every character featured in these tales feels like an actual person who lives and breathes in the setting. It's because the relationship dynamics within the Burgos family are so well done that, as a reader, you can't help becoming invested in their story arcs. As far as short story collections go, this one is undoubtedly one of my favorites of the year. As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology and highly recommend it to short story lovers.
