The Whole Shebang by James R. Van Laan is a collection of original poetry, all in free style but each ranging in length, tone, and tenor. In Breaking Loose, a woman is urged to leave a binding partnership, yet obligation renders her immobile as love is figured as weight, knots, and cords that harden into restraint. Survival as the Whole of Existence places the reader among castaways and disaster victims, asserting that once crisis dominates life, endurance overrides other concerns and persists after rescue through learned habits. Chimeras in the Dark records a partner who stays awake to absorb another’s night fears, trading rest for watchfulness until dawn resets the balance. The Last Nansong recounts a partner’s death from cancer, documenting tending routines, failed symbolic substitutions, and remembrance grounded in acts performed during their decline.
The Whole Shebang: The Collected Poems Of James R. Van Laan is a really wonderful and varied compilation, and the bookmark icon on my eReader was working overtime with this one. Van Laan does an excellent job of sectioning the poems so readers can take in a series of pieces within a clean, streamlined format. London Nights has us in the throes of a London night conversation, used as a vehicle for political disillusionment. Beneath a realistic picture of mist and rain, the conversion of hope into casualties is laid bare. My Darling Valentine rejects the gifts and ceremony of the holiday, turning to what matters with no holds barred. All the poems are heartening, but most surprisingly, they are incredibly thoughtful and thought-provoking. Luckily for us, it appears Van Laan is wildly prolific, and I look forward to what comes next.
