Aspry Jones’s Beware the Golden Tigers follows the Protectors, a superhero team whose recent victories have made them celebrities across the Aeril. When seven witches from the distant world of Manipesh cross through a multiverse portal, the heroes learn of an old war between Somatran magic users and Bhaskari priests who hunt them. One Bhaskari followed the women through the portal decades earlier. Ishan, now known as Golden Tiger, has awakened after nearly a century beside his tiger soulmate, Bombastus. Still devoted to the Bhaskari mission, Ishan begins searching the modern Aeril for the witches he believes escaped him. As the Protectors investigate threats across their cities, the hunt draws closer to their own circle, placing heroes from very different histories on a course toward the same conflict.
Aspry Jones’s Beware the Golden Tigers is a brilliant superhero fantasy, and the author has built an ambitious multiverse. Easy, a Protector in medieval Torvinia, is mischievous and inventive, telling a peasant “sucka” is affectionate and timing a lamb roast with a candle clock. I love Lixue, Melanie’s mother, who has tea ready when Melanie arrives and identifies her skin cream by honey and lotus scent. The world building is huge across its different eras. For example, Nadaniel teaches meditation in an all-blue universe, while Sable walks arm in arm with her father Suni through Fornio nightlife. Still, it’s the offbeat details that steal the scene, from a question mark appearing over Sky’s head at dinner, to Dexter realizing his housework matches Wifey Girls music. Wildly imaginative and immersive, readers who enjoy superhero families inside multiverse adventures will adore this second book in The Light Crown series.
