Beyond the Classroom: Black Male Educators Changing the Narrative contains stories about authors who want to inspire fellow Black males to pursue careers in education. The authors share their experiences as educators of color, the joys of the profession, and the many challenges that come with it. These men offer wonderful advice to Black educators and those who want to enter the education profession. Ideas for making education more attainable and attractive to Black males are also discussed. The educators believe that respect and relatability are huge factors in ensuring learners receive a proper education, as they may have difficulty learning from an educator they can’t relate to. The authors' commitment and dedication to the students are admirable, and one can only hope that their dreams of having more people of color in leadership positions are realized, especially since most of the under-18 age range are people of color.
Beyond the Classroom answers tough questions such as why there are so few Black males in education. The solutions to problems people of color face are discussed and the authors/educators explain their personal experiences and how they have handled unfair treatment and discrimination as Black male educators. This book provides readers with an intensive look at Black male educators and their experiences. I have learned a lot from these educators and feel inspired by their stories; they were enlightening and, despite having struggles within the system, these educators have remained committed to helping their students. I recommend Beyond the Classroom to readers of all colors who want to pursue a career in education; there is a lot of information that will help them on their path.
