Falling Apart by Jan Turk Petrie is a fascinating and disturbing novel about a near future that might happen in one European country. Two protagonists, Ash and Guy, both with military backgrounds, try to navigate through dangerous and unpredictable terrain, on the ground and over the sea, to carry out their missions. Ash’s progress is hampered by a little girl whom he saved after she was abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Guy, on the other hand, equipped with a high-tech electronic gizmo, is steadily progressing toward the target he was assigned to reach. As the story approaches its climax, the reader is thrown into a riveting confrontation that will reach a totally unexpected resolution.
The title is well chosen because “falling apart” is the impression this novel left me with. The novel is written in a third-person, present-tense narrative, well-chosen to give the reader a feeling of being a participant in the unfolding events. The pacing is masterly in its buildup from the original mystery, through hair-raising hardships and obstacles, to a crescendo of final confrontation when the nagging puzzles are resolved for the reader. The characters are very well drawn, psychologically believable, even though most of us have never met them in real life. The descriptions are vivid and nuanced, depicting environments that feel real to the reader, suggesting the impressive amount of research the author must have done to bring this unfamiliar landscape to life. As a bonus, there is a lot of tongue-in-cheek commentary throughout the narrative. This novel is a real page-turner, keeping me on the edge of my seat all through the reading. I highly recommend Falling Apart by Jan Turk Petrie to fans of high-tension thrillers.
