Kevin Booth's Celia's Room is a unique tale of a dangerous obsession between two aspiring artists who are drawn into Celia's mysterious world. Sensitive Joaquim, a gifted painter from Catalonia who never lived up to his father's expectations, relocates to Barcelona to pursue art studies. Likewise, Eduardo, a cynical writer from a privileged family since his father was a diplomat, is haunted by the trauma of his father's and sister's deaths. The two artists are at odds, yet both have a fascination with Celia's enigmatic universe for some reason. Set in Barcelona in the early nineties, the narrative explores a life of wild partying, drinking, and drugging in the gay subculture. In the run-down mansion, their roommates are equally weird and strange. Tension has been building until the mansion's inaugural party, when things take an unexpected and startling turn.

Celia's Room is a captivating story that depicts the LGBT+ community in Barcelona in the early 1990s by fusing historical details and factual art with the complicated lives of the three main characters. As a result, all the personas, as well as the vivid scenes, have a more authentic feel, immersing you in their dramatic world. Although the build-up may appear gradual at first, Kevin Booth's witty and intelligent writing style is commendable since he makes every little detail in each chapter pertinent. Throughout the story, the author demonstrates a profound understanding of Barcelona's history, art, and architecture, which instills in the reader a deep respect for his work. Although the book primarily appeals to LGBT+ readers, it also explores issues of self-acceptance, relationships, and sexuality. The quotations from well-known poets and authors that open each chapter are a bonus that I found intriguing. This book expertly combines mystery, art, and the LGBT subculture, culminating in a surprising conclusion.
