Bicentennial Summer by Mary Berelson takes us back to the 1970s and an unforgettable journey. Mary was just 13 when she set off on a journey across America with her younger sisters and father. It was 1976, and it was the start of an exciting adventure in Blue Pierre, their old car, but it didn’t take long for things to start going wrong. Bad decisions leave Mary realizing her father isn’t quite what she thought, and when they get stranded, it’s down to her to get them back home. Along the way, Mary learns much about growing up and family, lessons she’ll never forget.

Bicentennial Summer by Mary Berelson is a deep coming-of-age story that will bring back feelings of nostalgia among those who remember the celebrations in America. The descriptions of all the places the journey covers will make you feel you are there with them, taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with some amazing characters. These are people you can identify with on some level, and they are all likable in their own way. The underlying stories of growing up and courage against all the odds teach us much about loyalty and familial ties and, importantly, how to deal with disappointment when the scales fall from our eyes. It’s an emotional tale, humorous in some places, bittersweet in others, but it’s one you’ll never forget. It’s also an educational read for those who want to experience an American road trip without getting in the car and actually driving anywhere! Highly recommended reading, regardless of your favorite genre; it will stay with you for a long time.
