Billy And Ant Fall Out: Pride: Billy Growing Up, Volume 2 is a children's book for grades 4-6 written by James Minter and illustrated by Helen Rushworth. Billy and Ant were the best of friends, and they both dreamed of the day they'd become champion skateboarders. Billy was admiring a top-of-the-line skateboard in a magazine when Ant came by. They decided to spend the day riding their bicycles, but Billy wasn't too keen on Ant's idea of riding in the park. Even though Eddy was in juvenile detention now, Billy still felt uncomfortable at the thought of running into the bully's mates at the park. Ant didn't mind trying other places to go, but he said he needed to go home first and get some gloves. Ant had bad circulation in his hands, and, even in November, he could have problems with them. Billy got weird when Ant told him that. He began to sneer and make fun of Ant, calling him a baby. Ant was surprised and disappointed with his friend, and he left. Soon Billy saw Ant hanging around with Tom, who had become Ant's new best friend. Billy missed Ant, but he didn't know how to get his best friend back.

James Minter's children's book for grades 4-6, Billy And Ant Fall Out: Pride: Billy Growing Up, Volume 2, examines what it's like for kids when they have the inevitable fallings-out with their friends. Does the instigator own up and apologize or do they, like Billy, just let the situation continue on with no resolution? Billy's attempts to get himself a new best friend leaves him teetering on the edge of real trouble in this thoughtful book about the effects of pride and the possible problems with social interactions between kids of different age groups. There's some real suspense in the plot as Billy is persuaded to steal Ant's bike by a member of Eddy's gang, and is just about to sell it to a disreputable dealer named Stan the Man. Readers will breathe a collective sigh of relief as Billy rushes away from Stan's yard and decides to do the right thing. Rushworth's illustrations work so well with the story. I think my favorite panel shows the angry older woman who swipes at Billy with her cane when he rides too close to her at a crosswalk. Billy And Ant Fall Out: Pride: Billy Growing Up, Volume 2 is most highly recommended.
