In Bless Your Heart by Susann Camus, Jeannie never could have predicted what awaited her when she arrived in Greenville, North Carolina. She’s there to investigate whoever is sabotaging the trials for a drug meant to improve health, and one that has a pharmaceutical giant working alongside the health department. But someone doesn’t want her there and has already devised a plan to get her to leave. On her first day, the investigation goes from sabotage to murder after her boss is killed. The mystery deepens when an Arboretum next door houses poisonous plants anyone could have used to kill her boss. While she delves into the ties within the Greenville community, she has to use her instincts to discover who she can, and more importantly, can’t trust before she is the next victim.
The prologue sets up the suspense and effectively gets your attention with a little taste of what’s to come. Jeannie has a unique position as a healthcare investigator. She’s a delightful character and a strong lead. The mystery revolves around the pharmaceutical world and specifically focuses on weight loss, which at times includes themes of sexism, body image, and wonder drugs. There are different reasons why people want this drug for weight loss, and it is a subtle commentary that Susann Camus effectively weaves into the story. However, it is a mystery at heart, with Jeannie trying to find the connection between sabotage and murder. This also includes delightful side characters, particularly detectives Harmony Harris and Henry Smith, who are a dynamic duo with vastly different personalities. While one is gruff and quiet, the other is talkative and determined. These qualities give their scenes another layer through the subtle conflict of them butting heads yet having to work together. Bless Your Heart is a charming mystery that has suspense and humor as Jeannie navigates the world of weight-loss drugs.
