Blood Moon Rising by Leisl Kaberry follows Matara, a young wizard determined to save his critically ill sister, Kessaria, by using the combined power of the eight merndaicur shells. Years earlier, he used one shell to trap his enemies, including his uncle Alkarrien, the Dark One. Now, Matara risks freeing Alkarrien to heal Kessaria. He retrieves the shells from Belldwin, outmaneuvering his mother and other guardians, while his companion Arkanara assists him. Along the way, he tests his control over dark magic by attempting to manipulate Alkarrien, seeking mastery over the forces required to wield the merndaicur safely. Meanwhile, Kessaria and her companions are endangered in relation to Matara’s actions. Still, Matara’s pursuit remains: uniting the merndaicur and mastering all magical arts to save his sister.

Leisl Kaberry’s Blood Moon Rising, book two of the Titanian Awakenings series, ticks all the high fantasy boxes: ultra imagination, a world with magic, and...dragons! Having read the first book, I already knew going in that the characters, for all their brilliant prestidigitation, still feel natural and totally believable. It's a testament to Kaberry's skill as a writer that we can embrace the manipulation of the ocean and blood-red rain, and herbs and oils applied to a mirror to transform it into a portal, while also being on board with huts and rope ladders. The landscapes are spectacular, like a forest encampment where “willowy white bark glowed in the moonlight,” and a burnt-out village where blackened stone walls had tumbled to the ground. Overall, Blood Moon Rising is the perfect sequel to its predecessor, and I am absolutely committed, as well as excited, to see what comes next.

Blood Moon Rising is the second book in the Titanian Awakenings series by Leisl Kaberry. This epic fantasy follows Matara, a young wizard and the prophesied Ormnhi, who once defeated the dark army and their leader, Alkarrien, as he battles dark forces to save his sister Kessaria from a deadly curse. Twenty years after defeating Alkarrien, the Dark One, Matara’s abilities have grown. Still, he now faces a new danger: the ice encasing Alkarrien’s body begins to melt, threatening to free an ancient evil. Alongside his loyal friend Padicum, Kessaria’s struggles, and political intrigue in the kingdoms of Titania, Matara seeks to use dark magic and unlock the secrets of the powerful merndaicur shells to prevent Alkarrien’s rise. While Matara battles to rescue his sister, the brave dwarf, Amira, returns to the Dragon’s Breath Inn, sparking a new, dangerous adventure. Can Matara save his sister, and what happens when the dark one rises?

Blood Moon Rising is an immersive read, and the detailed world of Titania, a land of magic, kingdoms, and ancient artifacts, instantly pulled me in. This is an epic tale of journeys filled with danger and peril, deception, and hard choices. You’ll be absorbed in this imaginative work; the magic is well-developed, and the author brings terrifying creatures to life. The characters are genuinely flawed and relatable. The friendships are ingeniously developed, and the imagery had me feeling as though I was part of this exotic fantasy world. I enjoyed the vividly described landscapes, from castle halls to overgrown battlefields, and intricate magic systems centered around the merndaicur shells. The conflict revolves around the impending release of Alkarrien, dark magic, political machinations, and the moral questions on the use of forbidden arts. Leisl Kaberry’s prose is gorgeous and punctuated by sparkling dialogues. This is an enjoyable read.

With the dark lord Alkarrien supposedly safely locked away in an ice prison and his friend Matara off to locations unknown, ostensibly to find a means to save his sister Kessaria's life, Padicum receives troubling new information concerning the whereabouts of his mother. He is determined to brave whatever travails lie ahead of him, no matter how perilous, so long as he can rescue his mother at the end of his adventure. The last thing he expects is his friends' determination to follow him on this new quest or the startling truths that lie ahead concerning his murky origins. Only time will tell if Padicum and his band of friends succeed in Leisl Kaberry's Blood Moon Rising.

Blood Moon Rising is the second installment of Leisl Kaberry's Titanian Awakenings series. The world-building is rich, with Kaberry's vivid descriptions of mythical creatures complementing the beautifully drawn map and intricate power structures among the various factions—for example, the intriguing succession order of chieftains for Padicum's clan. The dialogue creatively mixes Old English and Kaberry's beautifully crafted Elvish, reflecting the language diversity of the factions and creating a read that will lure fantasy fans. She combines origin stories with summaries of past events, along with a comprehensive glossary, resulting in a narrative that flows smoothly and appeals to both new readers and longtime fans. She weaves these elements using descriptive storytelling to create an immersive adventure filled with exciting simultaneous events. I thoroughly enjoyed this captivating novel and look forward to the next book in the series.

Blood Moon Rising, the second book in the Titanian Awakenings series by Leisl Kaberry, is a well-written fantasy saga that continues the epic journey of Matara, a half-elven child destined for greatness, who battles dark magic, treacherous betrayal, and ancient prophecies. The story picks up twenty years after Matara defeated Alkarrien, the Dark One, with a merndaicur shell, only to find himself entangled once more in peril as Alkarrien’s icy prison begins to melt, threatening to unleash chaos upon Titania. Meanwhile, Kessaria, Matara’s sister, suffers from the shadowy influences of the Dark One, who seeks to manipulate her for his revival. Saving his sister from the curse will release the dark mage. As alliances are tested and dark forces gather, the siblings and their allies race against time to prevent Alkarrien's return and the devastation that would follow.

I particularly enjoyed Leisl Kaberry’s skillful exploration of loyalty, sacrifice, and the corrupting influence of power. The worldbuilding is impeccable, imagined with powerful magic, politics, and mythical creatures that collide. The characters are complex and compelling, and Matara’s growth from a restless man to a courageous hero, Kessaria’s inner conflict and strength, and the enigmatic Nagrin’s quiet devotion are well-executed. The dwarf, Amira, brings a new and unique energy to the story, ushering in a new adventure that is as affecting as it is enjoyable. The setting is meticulous, from the icy towers of Belldwin, situated in the middle of the ocean, to the mysterious island of Acandria, each location brimming with history and magic. The detailed magic system, especially the significance of the merndaicur shells and the dark arts, intrigued me. Blood Moon Rising is an immersive read, a propulsive tale with memorable characters.

Blood Moon Rising is the second book in the Titanian Awakenings series by Leisl Kaberry. Set twenty years after Matara’s heroic defeat of Alkarrien, the story follows the now-restless half-elven wizard as he takes on the role of royal advisor and brings his sister, Kessaria, along as his apprentice. Their journey quickly becomes dangerous when Kessaria’s hidden magical powers appear. She is captured by the ruthless King Raul, who casts a devastating curse. Desperate to save her, Matara makes a perilous decision to free Alkarrien from his icy prison in hopes of mastering forbidden magic. As Matara slips deeper into obsession and isolation, Padicum (Kessaria’s love) undertakes his own quest to rescue his kidnapped mother, only to uncover life-altering truths about his lineage. Each of them has a role to play and a price to pay as the omens of a blood-red moon appear with a brewing storm that threatens all of Titania. But who will survive?

Author Leisl Kaberry had me hooked from the very beginning. Although I haven’t read the first part of the series, I had no issue with catching up and falling in love with the characters. I love Matara, who was complicated and complex. I loved the way he took charge of the situation, even though he wasn’t ready for a new, thrilling journey. Kessaria was the catalyst for his desire to jump back into the game and save her before it was too late. Matara’s moral decline is particularly engrossing. On the other hand, Padicum’s journey is full of personal sacrifice. He struggles with his identity while trying to find a way to save his mother. The narrative style is perfect for Blood Moon Rising, and the plot is full of action. The details are incredible, the story is packed with intense drama, and it makes reading this epic fantasy so entertaining.
