Boarding Passes & Bad Decisions is a contemporary drama novel by Destiny Devereaux. Nakita married her high school sweetheart, with whom she has two kids. However, now they are divorced, and Nakita has planned a trip. After her sister and best friend cancel the trip, Nakita comes across a group of like-minded people on Facebook. Elise's husband has turned increasingly controlling over the years. She finds Nakita to be a kindred spirit and is now eager to join her on a cruise. Tiny has had a colorful past. The three women mingle with others, party on the cruise liner, visit the casino, and have a blast on the trip. However, Elise stumbles upon a couple of secrets that threaten to break up their little group.
Boarding Passes & Bad Decisions is an entertaining slice-of-life tale. As the first book in the Secrets at Sea Trilogy, this went by like a breeze. I found it to be a very enjoyable read. It's more of a character-driven story, but the plot still offers a few surprises for the reader. Author Destiny Devereaux has created some really funny and witty characters who play off each other very well. I found Nakita, Tiny, and Elise's interactions not only absorbing but also very hilarious. I also liked how Devereaux made sure all three women and the other secondary characters have distinct personalities and their own backstories. I felt the narrative was all the more immersive for that. I'm curious to see how the story will continue in the sequels. For readers who enjoy contemporary drama or chick-lit, this will be right up your alley.
