The Missing Chapters by Vegastarchild584 is book two in The Star Seed Series, which I had the pleasure of reading and which gave me a wonderful amount of backstory, but is not necessary as this book reads perfectly well as a stand-alone. I think what I love most about the adventures of Zhang and Simon is that Vegastarchild584 is entirely comfortable with making a reader want to wring one or both of their necks and then subsequently high-five them for a job well done. The landscapes and planets they visit are visually depicted, and as a reader who has spent time in Shanghai, the beauty and madness of the city really do come to life. In the last book, there was some major jealousy over fame, and the journey to resolving themselves as soulmates is central. Here, the couple is far more united, even though Zhang's complete loss hinders the bond. Nevertheless, the sizzle always brings them back, and Vegastarchild584 knows how to write a sexy scene. Mrs. Cheng is my absolute favorite character here, heightened by a bittersweet twist of fate. Overall, this is an excellent sequel to The Star Seed Series.

In the first installment, the pair is entrusted with assisting humanity in its ascent. Commander Zhang and Lieutenant Simon accept their earthly mission. However, the trainees' focus slips during training as they abandon themselves to the pleasures of the body. Zhang is tasked with unearthing illicit activity in China's entertainment sector, but amnesia manifests in complications; thus, Simon must continue to complete their key assignment alone. In the second book, a problematic escape disrupts the timeline when one space mission to the next falls apart in a way that only Zhang and Simon can make happen, after picking up drinks with unlikely companions, crashing on wayward planets, and being chased off it. The soulmate connection between Simon and Zhang remains, and with cancel culture, selfie furors, keeping their sex lives a secret, and accomplishing the mission, they need all the support they can get.

What exactly is ascension? “In a word, it’s the raising of the mass consciousness and moving up an octave in vibration to an even better more kind and loving world. It’s where we recognize the Divine in everyone.” The Missing Chapters merges sex and philosophy so they feel as they should, which is that they are intrinsically connected, and the author uses subdued metaphors to tie everything together. The soulmate relationship between Simon and Zhang is a form of ascension itself, and just as Earth needs to dismantle the weight and inequality that make kindness and love at the highest level possible, Simon and Zhang have to do this within themselves to reach their own purest level of love. Mission Everlight is universal. In the first book, the whole human incarnation starts with training, birthing, and raising, and in this book, their immersion is complete, but it's not any easier for mission completion. Simon and Zhang continue evolving as soulmates with physical and emotional supreme attachment, and I look forward to seeing it grow further. Very highly recommended.
