In Break My Bones by Michelle Ian, we follow Michael, a successful suspense fiction writer whose own life begins to mirror the dark stories he writes. Michael is returning to his small-town Tennessee roots to end his book promotion tour and take over a local shop. He is already a deeply anxious man, privately dealing with family trauma and relying on stolen prescription medication just to get through the day. Things go from stressful to terrifying when a violent figure from his teenage years suddenly tracks him down, making it clear that a decades-old grudge is far from settled. When a local body turns up, a detective gets involved, and Michael is forced into a corner. Can he protect the few people he cares about before this terrifying shadow from 1981 destroys him?

Michelle Ian’s Break My Bones is a psychological thriller in which a simple book signing spirals into an intense battle for survival against a ghost that refuses to stay buried forever. What really blew me away was how the narrative splits between a terrifying psychological stalker story and a smart police investigation. The older detective, Rex Lynch, brings a great, world-weary perspective that gives the town a real sense of history and weight. There are no perfect heroes here, just broken people trying to stay afloat while their worst secrets get pulled into the light. The tension builds beautifully, slowly peeling back layers of old grudges from 1981 without ever giving away the endgame too early. The author’s voice feels very honest and cinematic, letting the fear build naturally in the subtle moments between conversations. I was completely locked in from the very first page. I highly recommend this to all readers who love dark, complex mysteries with very high stakes. This book is definitely worth your reading time.
