Bridges: Coup de Foudre by Gabrielle Neord chronicles the extraordinary life of Jillian Bauer, a young woman who suffers neglect but is determined to shape her destiny. She fights to survive in a grim world filled with the stench of decay, struggling for food scraps. After her sister gains custody of her, Jillian’s talent for languages and her determination to become a translator lead her to Britain, where everything changes after a chance meeting with the charming musician Graham Spencer. This meeting introduces her to London’s vibrant life and her blossoming sensuality, but secrets from his past threaten to shatter her dreams and test her feelings for him. Separated from Graham, Jillian still thinks about him. When given another opportunity, will she grab a chance at love?
I enjoyed the thematic development in Bridges. The author writes skillfully about self-discovery, the power to shape one’s destiny through hard work, and the transformative power of love. Gabrielle Neord portrays Jillian as a woman emerging from the ashes like a phoenix. The squalid nature of her upbringing inspires pathos, but her intelligence and will to succeed are characteristics I enjoyed. The setting shifts from the bleak, dilapidated neighborhoods of Michigan to historic locales in London and Ireland, mirroring Jillian’s emotional journey and struggles. The well-drawn characters, including Jillian and her loving sister Sunny, as well as the enigmatic Graham, felt like real people to me — authentic, flawed, and memorable. This author masterfully depicts Jillian’s internal growth as she transitions from a girl defined by her circumstances to a woman reclaiming her life, and that resonated strongly with me.
