As soon as Broken Build begins you know that Jen Jones is not your average heroine. She’s got gangbangers whistling at her and Muscle Boy is blackmailing her. That’s not even half of her story; she’s changed her name from Jennifer Cruz to Jen Jones and had plastic surgery to escape her past. But as Rachelle Ayala is intent to teach us, the more things change the more they stay the same. In an effort to escape from his blackmail, Jen does a job for Muscle Boy who later ends up dead and she’s the prime suspect. Dave, her former victim and current love interest, saw her with Muscle Boy whose name is actually Rey and has to wonder about her innocence. You’ll wonder if Dave will ever believe Jen is no murderer and will he ever learn how their pasts are connected.
Broken Build was a great drama-filled mystery loaded up with enough twists and turns to make your head spin. Dave’s character is enough to make you want to give up on him. Sure he’s tortured and he’s been through so much in his life, but does that really excuse his habit of using and discarding the women in his life? Ultimately he is redeemed but it was a little difficult to root for him at times. At times the tech-speak was a bit off putting, but it was no different than chatting up your office IT guy. Rachelle Ayala brought out the best in both Jen and Dave, making them just flawed enough to redeem themselves and fight like hell for their happily ever after.
The couple that can overcome the obstacles facing Dave and Jen deserve a long life together and a house full of babies.
