In Broken: Broken Not Lost (The Breach Chronicles, Book I) by Ivy Logan, the Heichi clan acts as guardians to prevent another conflict between the supernaturals and humans. When new guardian Caitlin is born with an ominous prophecy, she becomes an outcast in her clan. Despite her efforts to prevent the prophecy from coming true, Caitlin falls in love and marries a human, the merchant Michael. Together they have two children, Talia and Joshua. Only Talia inherits her mother’s power. When her fear of the prophecy returns, Caitlin leaves her family behind, taking Joshua with her as he’s vulnerable and powerless. Meanwhile, the tyrant King Damien is about to enter their lives and bring more despair to the already broken family.

The world-building is fascinating, intricate, deftly done, and the supernatural beings are the ones that readers already familiar with; werewolves (or known as werexols in Broken), wraiths, sorceresses, giants and others. The pace is moderate and suits the complex plot, which also has a nice twist regarding Talia’s younger brother, Joshua. The characters, particularly protagonists Ava, Caitlin, Talia, Michael and even the evil Damien, have good depth. A tyrant, a broken family, the loss of innocent lives-Broken harbors on a tragedy, with regrets, revenge and mistakes. These aspects made it a slightly darker story. However, the elements of love, hope, bravery and strong bonds forged in adversity will appeal to fans of romantic fantasy. All in all, it’s a solid debut for The Breach Chronicles by Ivy Logan.

The review for s spot-on. The characters in Broken maybe supernatural beings but there's an essential 'human-ness' to them that makes them not only totally relatable to, but also makes one vested in their stories. I, for one, can't wait for the sequels.
