Brown Sugar & Spice is a work of fiction penned by author Mathis Bailey, which focuses on LGBTQ relationships, modern life struggles, and big decisions. Our central character is Pierre Jackson, a man who thinks he has it all on his whirlwind journey to become a superstar chef. But once his famous news-anchor boyfriend De’Andre is gone and a family death rocks his world, Pierre ends up with next to nothing, the future looking grim. That’s when new roommate Zola Washington enters the scene. She has demons of her own to escape but also dreams of opening a high-end bistro, and she sets her sights on the broken-down Pierre to help her do it.

Part romantic drama and part coming of age tale, Pierre's and Zola’s stories encapsulate real struggles that up and coming young people have in the world today. I really enjoyed the issues discussed with men like De’Andre not wanting to come out because of their status and their family’s opinions, and I admired Pierre’s strength of character for staying true to himself, his identity and his passions in life. Author Mathis Bailey writes well of the hustle and bustle of the modern dating world, flying from one prospective relationship to another as the battle for hearts rages on. This makes for a fast-paced, amusing and also realistic love story that represents all different kinds of relationships really well. Overall, Brown Sugar & Spice is a diverse and immersive work of romantic and dramatic fiction that lovers of those genres should definitely read.
