As someone who has had to overcome many obstacles I never thought I would would, I felt the urge to write something uplifting and relatable. This story is fictional, however in many ways I can say it's idea is based on reality.

Building More Than Walls by Emily Kilgore is a hopeful story about what it means to start over when life has been broken apart. The book follows Sarah Martinez as she works to leave behind the hurt of domestic violence and tries to build something safer and better for herself and her daughter, Maya. At the start of her journey, Sarah takes on simple repairs, patching walls and tightening loose hinges, and she also learns while taking on these little tasks. Each project brings change to her life, helping her discover inner strength and confront the pains from the past she once avoided. Her growing skills become more than just fixing broken things. They help her rebuild her life.

Emily Kilgore’s writing is honest and easy to comprehend. The pace followed Sarah's growth as it started off gently, giving space to understand her struggles, and then naturally built speed as she grew stronger, which kept me completely drawn in. The story also has moments of real action that kept me turning the pages, from the long hours she spends shaping wood to the pressure of the exam that might open a new chapter in her career. It was in those moments that I felt her struggle and effort the most. What I really loved was how much the people around Sarah, like Joe, Maria, and Beth, kept shaping her along the way. Each of them brings something that adds meaning to her journey, and I found myself looking forward to the moments they appeared. The relationships in the book gave me a clear idea of who Sarah was becoming, and reminded me of my relationship with my friends and how they have always tried to make me a better version of myself. I love how the book points to the themes of strength, the need for community, and small wins. I recommend Building More Than Walls by Emily Kilgore to anyone who enjoys stories about characters growing and finding their way.
