Call of the Blackbird is a historical fiction mystery novel by Nancy Polk Hall. Carrie Mitchell travels to France to visit her childhood friend Colette and after a week, decides to take a break. She rents a car, drives into the French countryside, and takes a picnic on a hillside overlooking the Moselle river. However, when she turns the ignition of her rented car, nothing happens. She walks to the nearest town to call for help and meets a boy, Jacques, who introduces her to his father, the Comte de Merle. The three become friends and, while sightseeing with Jacques in Verdun, the boy goes missing. Determined to help find him, Carrie finds herself in the middle of an intriguing story that goes back to the Second World War. Who would want to kidnap Jacques and why?
