Can You See The Magic? by Chris Stead is the result of a beautiful collaboration between Chris Stead, the writer, and Els Dirickx, the artist. The story is about a brother and sister who want to show their father that there is magic everywhere and, if he truly believes in it, he can see it. They want to show their father the magic that exists in their farmhouse and as they come across objects and natural shapes, the children try to look beyond and find the magic that is hidden in them. Their father is unable to see the magic that is buried in the objects and shapes around him. Will these two kids be able to make him see the magic?
The concept is magical and I like the way the author weaves whimsy into the normal things one gets to see around them. The pictures are vibrant and vivid. The artist’s vision and the writer’s words combined together make the book dreamy and magical. The book encourages young readers to dream and become imaginative and more creative. The author and the artist have collaborated to create an exceptionally unique book that will make children look at everything around them with a different perspective and create unique artworks. Any book that encourages children to do new things and become creative is a must-read. This book is good for interactive sessions in classrooms where everyone can discuss together the probabilities and possibilities of creating new artworks from mundane objects by looking at them differently. The Reverse Art concept in the book gives a different experience to young readers and introduces them to a new form of tangible art.
