In Cao Kitten: Wishing Star by Cao Kitten, an anthropomorphic cat longs for a summertime adventure. The cat’s human and animal friends have left and he is bored and lonely. Almost immediately after he makes his wish, there’s a flash of light and an object falls from the sky. The town that the cat lives in becomes silent. From there, Cao Kitten and some new friends pursue the story of what the strange object was and why it came to Earth. The cat can talk to and be understood by his “mom and dad," his human parents, as well as others it interacts with. This is Book 1 of the Cao Kitten series aimed at young readers aged six and up.
Cao Kitten, the author of Cao Kitten: Wishing Star, has a wonderfully creative imagination. Not only is the story itself unique and innovative, but I also never knew what was going to transpire in the next scene. The entire book is a feel-good story that young readers will want to read again and again. The accompanying black-and-white drawings by the author on every page are delightful and complement the text perfectly. I liked the anthropomorphic aspect of the kitten because its very human-like reactions made it easy to identify with Cao Kitten. I also liked the fact that young readers will take away some good lessons in morality. The book will stimulate young readers’ imaginations and leave them guessing as to what’s going to happen next.
