Alcoholism and mental illness. Unfortunately, these are two things that often go hand in hand, and way too many people have to deal with them, either by having these issues themselves, or by having a loved one suffering from these illnesses. In Cape Maybe by author Carole Fragale Brill, our protagonist, Katie, is being raised by her mother, June, who has both. Eventually, her grandfather, who has always been the most stable and supportive influence in young Katie’s life, is able to gain custody of her, but prior to that she is exposed to things that even a person much older shouldn’t have to deal with. As a young woman, she swears to herself that she will never go down the same path as her mother. But when real life enters the equation, with difficulties in life and love, Katie realizes that nothing is very simple and the temptations to take the easy way out pull strongly on her heart and her mind.

Cape Maybe does a good job at discussing some difficult issues, and ones that are experienced by many people. The pull of a genetic predisposition to addiction versus a very real desire to keep oneself from going down a path that could lead you to destruction is also a very real struggle and one that author Carole Fragale Brill describes sensitively and with great empathy through Katie. Cape Maybe would be a great read for anyone who has gone through a situation with addiction or mental illness, or someone looking for a good story with a dash of romance. I am pleased to recommend Cape Maybe and hope that author Carole Fragale Brill is continuing with her efforts in this work.
