A romance in Los Alamos, an accident in New Mexico, and a fire in Montréal. Then Myra Simpson would have gotten away with everything. But not on Dr. Monroe's watch. He must poke his nose into matters that concern him and those that don't. Especially state business, like the death of an old colleague. In Mission 38 by Michael Berk, the Cold War has just begun, and Dr. Jack Monroe is called into action again when his friend, Dr. Troy Kent, turns up dead after attending his wedding. It turns out that Kent had been working with Myra on an unusual type of weapon, and his death could mean that the Los Alamos Nuclear Facility is crawling with spies. However, Myra is at large, and no one knows the extent of the breach. Only Monroe can reach Myra, but with the Russians, Americans, and Israelis itching to get their hands on Myra and the intel she possesses, Monroe is in way over his head. Will he succeed or run out of luck this time?
Friendship, betrayal, fear, greed, and cynicism all converge in this gripping thriller by Michael Berk. Mission 38 features an interesting cast of relatable characters that you can probably compare to people you know in real life. The plot begins with a couple of seemingly unrelated scenes, but they quickly intersect, evolving into a coherent sequence of events. At times, the plot development feels like listening to a friend tell a story. Meanwhile, other elements—the thrill, uncertainty, and danger—were well captured, polished, and ever-present. Mission 38 follows on from Mission 37 in the Jack Monroe series, and although it can be read as a standalone, the inclusion of the characters page helps you to get into the narrative right from the beginning. I also liked the historical accuracy portrayed in the level of distrust between the Soviet state and its NKVD agents. This is the right kind of fiction to get lost in for a day or two.
