A romance in Los Alamos, an accident in New Mexico, and a fire in Montréal. Then Myra Simpson would have gotten away with everything. But not on Dr. Monroe's watch. He must poke his nose into matters that concern him and those that don't. Especially state business, like the death of an old colleague. In Mission 38 by Michael Berk, the Cold War has just begun, and Dr. Jack Monroe is called into action again when his friend, Dr. Troy Kent, turns up dead after attending his wedding. It turns out that Kent had been working with Myra on an unusual type of weapon, and his death could mean that the Los Alamos Nuclear Facility is crawling with spies. However, Myra is at large, and no one knows the extent of the breach. Only Monroe can reach Myra, but with the Russians, Americans, and Israelis itching to get their hands on Myra and the intel she possesses, Monroe is in way over his head. Will he succeed or run out of luck this time?

Friendship, betrayal, fear, greed, and cynicism all converge in this gripping thriller by Michael Berk. Mission 38 features an interesting cast of relatable characters that you can probably compare to people you know in real life. The plot begins with a couple of seemingly unrelated scenes, but they quickly intersect, evolving into a coherent sequence of events. At times, the plot development feels like listening to a friend tell a story. Meanwhile, other elements—the thrill, uncertainty, and danger—were well captured, polished, and ever-present. Mission 38 follows on from Mission 37 in the Jack Monroe series, and although it can be read as a standalone, the inclusion of the characters page helps you to get into the narrative right from the beginning. I also liked the historical accuracy portrayed in the level of distrust between the Soviet state and its NKVD agents. This is the right kind of fiction to get lost in for a day or two.

Mission 38 by multi-award-winning Michael Berk is an exhilarating spy thriller blended with historical fiction. The story unfolds in the aftermath of World War II, in Montreal. Sad news mars the happy mood of newlyweds Jack Monroe and Dionne when Jack’s close friend dies in a hit-and-run. Jack’s inquiries into his friend’s death lead him to the Los Alamos classified lab in New Mexico, and Jack suspects that his friend’s death was not an accident. Unknown to Jack, his nosing around Los Alamos is getting in the way of treacherous Soviet moles who are calculating their odds of selling to the highest bidder the deadly secrets they had stolen from Los Alamos. Will Jack unravel who killed his friend, identify the traitors, and recover the stolen secrets?

Mission 38 by Michael Berk is the second novel featuring Jack and Dionne, but it reads perfectly well as a standalone. I liked how the novel portrayed the atmosphere and geopolitical tensions in the aftermath of WWII. The sophisticated plot, the quirky characters, the roller-coaster espionage mission, the international span of events covering Canada, the USA, Britain, France, Israel, and the Soviet Union, and the exposure of Stalin’s reign and Jewish genocide were praiseworthy. In addition, a touch of clean romance and tension-relieving humor felt warmly welcome, and puppy Winston would be sure to win Mr. Churchill’s heart! I look forward to my reunion with Jack and Dionne in the prequel and, hopefully, in a sequel, and I highly recommend this thoroughly enjoyable novel to historical fiction and spy thriller fans.

In this second scintillating Cold War mystery from Michael Berk, Mission 38 picks up the story of Jack Monroe and his new wife, Dionne. Hoping for a fresh start together in Montreal, they are once again drawn into international espionage when an old friend seeks Jack’s advice before dying at the hands of a Soviet spy. In a world where the nuclear arms race dominates every government’s objectives, Jack is shocked to learn that his friend had created a different kind of weapon. Dr. Troy is gone, but his deadly prototype is out in the world, and operatives from the Allied nations will stop at nothing to possess it. For Monroe, the battle to find Troy’s killer is personal, but he’s up against powerful government agencies that care only about the bioweapon. His life has just become expendable, a casualty of a hidden war during a time of supposed peace.

This is another brilliant Cold War historical novel by Michael Berk. The theme is “striving for normalcy” after WWII. The Monroes crave a peaceful life after the turmoil, a life where they can invest in their new marriage and shape a postwar future—and they get heartbreakingly close. Michael Berk brings the theme full circle at the conclusion, where romance and an existential hope for the future begin to blossom among other secondary characters. But there’s a devastating push and pull between the normalcy they long for and the lingering chaos and violence that have carried into this fragile period of history known as the Cold War. I absolutely loved what happens with the secret, especially how the author chooses to handle it. There’s a nuance of wholesomeness in Mission 38 that I truly valued. Another great read.
