Captain Steve: A Story of Coming Home, written by Jennifer Tzivia MacLeod and illustrated by Tanja Tadic, is a story of Esteban Hernandorena, a non-Jewish hero who helped Jews come home to Israel. Captain Steve helped many Jews travel to Israel, although this was very dangerous and the ship was stopped a few times and Captain Steve was arrested. As the group of people traveled, they encountered difficulties and also struggled with the path they should be taking for their lives. However, a leader emerged from the group and Captain Steve took him under his wing to try to prepare him for following in his shoes.
Jennifer Tzivia MacLeod and Tanja Tadic have teamed up in Captain Steve: A Story of Coming Home. Captain Steve is just a regular man, but he is a hero due to his bravery and acts that he performed in order to protect others. Captain Steve helps so many people, but he also takes a young boy under his wing and is a mentor to him. This is a very touching story and I love that it is based on a real person. The illustrations are beautifully done; they are a nice addition to the story and go along beautifully with the text. The book is well-written and the characters and the setting were brought to life in the descriptions. This story is rich with historical and cultural detail and should not be missed out on when studying this particular time period.
