Carissa's Law by Misty Boyd begins with eighteen-year-old Carissa Schultz, the protagonist, in the parking lot of the university, pondering on very serious questions. Born with a rare condition known as spina bifida, she’s been through a lot of challenges. But now, on the threshold of mature life, she desperately wants to make a difference, to give purpose to her life: “What would it be like to change hundreds of years of ignorance about people like her? What would it take to change minds and hearts? Could she even do it? Was she strong enough?” Her journey is what gives answers to these questions, a story of her coming to terms with herself, navigating love, and taking the path less traveled. But does she have what it takes to change a generation of ignorance?
Misty Boyd has created a story that is bold and audacious, a story for people who want to stand out, people who are ready to overcome their human limitations and reach for higher levels of success. Carissa's Law’s characters are gorgeous and the author does a great job in giving them flesh. I found myself rooting for the protagonist. The writing is also one of the things that caught my attention — it is fluid and confident. Then there is the powerful message of the story, the message that we become free inside when we embrace a purpose, when we live for something. But not everything worth living for comes easily. I found this story to be both inspiring and entertaining.
