S.R. Woodward’s Centurion follows Mark Royce, an office worker recovering from the removal of a brain tumor, after anonymous tickets take him and his boss to a live paranormal television show at Gosbecks Manor. Mark has spent months insisting that his earlier visions were symptoms of illness, so That’s My Ghost! is exactly the kind of program he wants nothing to do with. The ruined Essex site has a history stretching from Roman occupation to witch trials, and the production team soon finds that its reputation may deserve serious consideration. During the broadcast, medium Hilary DiAngelo attacks Mark while speaking in Latin, then disappears after the crew returns to its hotel. As strange violence spreads beyond the cameras, Mark discovers that his invitation was never an accident.
S.R. Woodward’s Centurion is a book I picked up because the premise is original, and it is not easy to find brilliant supernatural horror that also happens to read like a fresh idea. Better still, Woodward gives the book a huge cast, each character so completely distinct that I never once lost track of who anyone was. Detective Sergeant Karim Jacobi might be the first officer I have ever really liked right off the bat, and he shows an extreme patience while handling a teenage murder, especially to a traumatized witness who cannot yet tell him what happened. I also love the three-person CAPIT group because their friendship gives the investigation real personality. Paul Bachelor can somehow turn even a frightening discovery into a rambling lecture, yet he is exactly the friend everyone needs when things get intense. Woodward's paranormal possession is terrifying, and the kind that replaces its victim completely. Overall, this is a singular plot and storyline packaged in polished prose, and with all the intelligent thrills I love in the genre. Very well done.
