What can a regular day become? One small child discovers that everyday moments can lead to unforgettable adventures in Sarah Henderson’s Ordinary Days: The Seasonal Collection. Told with rhythmic text, this collection is about how a young boy spends his days across all four seasons. It begins with him putting on his rain boots and coat before heading outside. He sees an ocean in what others would call a puddle. As he splashes in it, he’s a hero to two toy ducks he imagines are in danger. Then, on a warmer day, the boy embarks on a prehistoric journey that starts when he pretends a stick is a giant carrot. The final two stories show more ordinary moments taking on new meaning through a child's eyes. Where will his imagination take him next?
Reading Ordinary Days by Sarah Henderson brought a huge smile to my face. The little boy is easy to love. His curiosity and imagination reminded me of exploring the woods with my dad and brother as a child. As a teacher, I'd read this book during a unit on the seasons or weather. I’m sure my students would love to talk about what they’d imagine during those same days. I’d also take them on a nature walk for items they can use as inspiration to create their own “ordinary moments” tales. The rhyming text will keep children engaged while also helping with early literacy skills. The soothing illustrations bring the boy's sense of wonder to life. I couldn’t stop looking at them. Anyone looking for stories about childhood, the changing seasons, or imagination will want to pick this one up. This picture book would make a wonderful addition to homes, classrooms, and libraries. It reminded me of Roald Dahl's words, "Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." This story finds that magic in everyday moments.
