Chain Reaction by Malabika Ray unfolds in modern-day London, where a model's sudden death catalyzes the plot. Luna, the model in question, had fallen to her death from the balcony in her flat. Sri, a PhD student with a knack for solving mysteries, gets involved. Her intuition tells her that there is more to Luna's death than meets the eye, so she works alongside Neil Basu (an MI6 agent) and Matt Holmes (Sri's flatmate and a PI) to investigate the model's mysterious death. Together, they uncover numerous discrepancies and shocking truths related to the case. Their probing reveals that Luna was, in fact, an ex-British spy who, in the past, maintained secret communications with physicist Lise Meitner regarding Nazi Germany’s secret nuclear efforts. With danger closing in on the trio, can they crack the case and discover the identity of Luna's murderer before it's too late?

Chain Reaction by Malabika Ray is an exciting book that blends social critique, historical facts, and espionage into a story that will stimulate both the emotional and mental faculties of its readers. The author doesn't hold back when it comes to thematic development and character growth, crafting a novel that explores many disciplines—feminism, science, ethics, and politics. I like how Ray boldly explores the realities of historical women whose dynamic contributions (especially in the fields of espionage and science) may go unacknowledged even in our present modern era. The writing vividly echoes the tonal shifts between the themes, the witty banter among the main cast, and the reflective flashbacks of Nazi Germany. Altogether, this book will be appreciated by fans of historical fiction novels with an espionage thriller edge.
