Chance of Rain by Renee Riva is a beautiful love story about Christie and Joe. After being stood up at the altar, Christie embarks on a journey to Mexico with a broken heart and with the aim of escaping her embarrassment. What would have been her honeymoon destination becomes her hiding place, away from the world and, more importantly, away from Jeremy. It is in Loreto Bay, Mexico that she finds freedom and true love. God turns her near-death experience into a timely encounter with a wonderful guy, Joe Landon, who is on a mission to discover the hidden gem, a canyon, near Loreto Bay for his work assignment. Little does he know what awaits him in Mexico as he leaves Mobile, Alabama.
Chance of Rain is a short book, written for a reader who wants to read a fun but still really impactful story. With themes of hope, healing, and having the courage to move forward, Renee Riva intertwines this beautiful story with instances of humor and reflection. As I read Chance of Rain, I could not help making a comparison between Jeremy and Joe, and appreciating how Joe portrayed important godly principles. Renee Riva skilfully contrasts these two men’s characters. Jeremy’s mission is a selfish one and he looks out for himself alone as compared to Joe, who is full of kindness and risks his life to save Christie. Though the message in the book appears simple, the impact that Chance of Rain had on me was significant. Reading this book filled me with hope and a new perspective.
