This book correlates the animals that live in the Yellowstone National Park today to prehistoric animals, mainly the dinosaurs that resided in the vast parkland over seventy million years ago. The author skillfully explains and illustrates the different types of dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus-Rex and the Pteranodon. He then compares those animals to the grizzly bear and the bald eagle of today. He also does the same with the Dromaeosaurs and the wolf, for example. He continuously uses a "compare and contrast" technique throughout the entire book.
I found the book really interesting and very informative. It made me interested in going to Yellowstone National Park, having never been there before. I highly recommend this book for young children. And, because of the large descriptions and fine illustrations of the different types of animals it can also be paraphrased so that the very young child could also understand the information. I often use that technique to incorporate older level books into my curriculum to meet the needs of my preschool aged students.
