Chaos Looming is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author H. B. Reneau. Written for young adult reading audiences, the work forms the opening novel of The Legion of Pneumos book series. Our central protagonist is Keira Altman, new to the world around her, but quickly learning about the struggle for power in Loren, and her role and duty as a Legionnaire. As Keira leans to wield unique powers with pneuma, she realizes the potential danger of chaos. So when her world is turned upside down in an instant, it is chaos which she fears most, but also must conquer if she is to survive.
Author H. B. Reneau has crafted a compelling opening to a fantasy series which does a fantastic job at introducing us to the world and the characters, whilst also providing this first very satisfying adventure. I enjoyed a slow-burn in the worldbuilding aspect, and Reneau’s vivid descriptive work and atmospheric text pay off as a brilliant and immersive set-up for the novel’s future action. I also really enjoyed the narrative and dialogue presentation around Keira and Danny, whose intriguing relationship shows much promise and gives a deeper emotional focus to the tale. For young adult audiences, the unique magical properties of learning to wield pneuma will be very inventive and engrossing too. Overall, I would certainly recommend Chaos Looming for YA and adult readers alike, and indeed anyone seeking a solidly penned and highly creative new fantasy world to step into.
