Chick Singer by Lorraine Devon Wilke is a heartfelt, emotionally nuanced novel about music, motherhood, and the complicated legacy of dreams deferred. Libby Conlin once chased rock-and-roll stardom in the 1980s but now lives a quieter life. That is until her recently divorced daughter, Bridget, returns home, reigniting old tensions. When Bridget uploads Libby’s long-forgotten demo tracks to the internet, Libby’s music and the secrets it conceals go viral, catapulting her back into the spotlight. As past and present collide, Libby must confront unresolved heartbreaks and family dynamics while navigating a second chance at creative and personal fulfillment. Set to a soundtrack of hard-earned wisdom and emotional honesty, Chick Singer is a soul-stirring tale about finding your voice at any age.
Author Lorraine Devon Wilke's novel comes from the heart in a deeply moving examination of art, aging, and the unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters. There’s emotional weight even from the opening of this deep read. Libby and Bridget are infused with brilliant dialogue exchanges that convey hidden tensions and a lot between the lines for raw, real, and undeniably relatable characters that leap off the pages. Libby’s dilemmas are also presented with precise narrative control that lets readers into her head when it matters most, describing her personal turmoil in relatable ways that readers from all walks of life can understand. The prose is far from simplistic in its descriptions of reactions to the resurgence of the past, as Wilke writes with lyrical grace and unflinching authenticity to bring these difficult feelings out. Overall, Chick Singer is a vibrant read that I would certainly recommend, and a celebration of second chances that will uplift and inspire.
