When I decided to read “Chronicles of an Irreverent Reverend: What Goes Wrong Can Make You Better” by Joe Baroody, I wasn't really sure what I was in for. The title of the book seemed like a mix of humor and self-help and the book description promised inspirational and uplifting stories. And yes, there are many stories in this book which are all written from the point of view of the author who tells us stories from his life. In some of the stories, things do indeed go wrong but Joe Baroody manages to see something positive in the events and learns from them (most of the time). Some stories are sad, others are outrageously funny and even silly, while another set of stories are heart-warming.
I enjoyed most of the stories and my favorite probably is the story about the cab driver and how his kindness influenced the author to also be kind at another stage in his life. Many of the stories show us the good side of humans – the side we often don't get to see in our everyday lives or simply ignore. “Chronicles of an Irreverent Reverend: What Goes Wrong Can Make You Better” is a good book to have in your house for times when you need a bit of a lift, a laugh or renewed hope in humanity. The only fault I could find with the book was that the opening story didn't seem like such a good choice. If it would have been at a latter part in the book, it might not have given me an initial wrong impression of the book. Fortunately I continued reading and found one or the other treasure amongst the story. It is not the kind of book you read in one go but a book you'll enjoy over a period of a few days or even weeks – it has humor, wisdom and entertainment packed into small little doses that everyone can enjoy and understand.
