What does it mean to have a loving family and a safe home in which to live? Coco, a puppy, is about to find out. In D.M. Russo’s Coco’s New Home, she shares her story of being adopted and taken into a new home with a new family to love and care for her. And she asks the young reader some questions about their home, their family, and what makes them happy. Coco is happy to share her story and to learn about the reader's story, too. Coco’s not always happy in her new home; sometimes she’s scared, too, like when it’s dark and there’s shadows everywhere. Her family helps her adjust, and she’s not afraid to ask, “Are you afraid of the dark?”
D.M. Russo’s picture book, Coco’s New Home, is all about love, caring, and enjoying life with your family. It’s about learning, too. Told in the first-person from Coco’s point of view, this is an interactive story that allows young readers to share similar experiences. Everything Coco shares is followed by a question about similar experiences in the reader’s world. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, and help move the story along. The illustrator portrays Coco’s mood for everything she experiences, from happiness and excitement to sadness and even fear. This is a wonderful story for the really young and will help them understand and appreciate the world in which they live, as well as Coco’s world. The puppy’s closing question, “Are you excited about tomorrow?” suggests that Coco is definitely excited. And, why not? Tomorrow is bound to be another exciting day for us all! Loved it!
