Colin the crab has a lot of friends and he’s always busy helping out with various construction projects in his community. In Tuula Pere’s Colin the Crab’s Friends, Colin enjoys his garden, his friends, and helping out where needed. He’s often working on Ms Catfish’s villa, keeping it from falling apart. He also helps Norma the newt and Sally the starfish. Not to mention the hungry fish family that hopes Colin will share his meal with them.

Tuula Pere’s picture book, Colin the Crab’s Friends, is a Colin the Crab mini-story for 3-6-year-old readers. The plot follows Colin as he potters around with various handyman jobs in his community. He is a good friend to have around, but his friends are also good to him. Friendship is a powerful tool in a healthy, hard-working community and Colin has developed several good friendships. The language is simple so young readers will start to follow along. Dialogue is used sparingly, but effectively. The illustrations by Roksolana Panchyshyn are bright and colorful and help move the story along. Young readers will enjoy following Colin’s busy days as they learn the importance of helping others, being a good friend, and working hard within a community. “Colin the Crab is happy that he has so many good friends.” Building friendships is hard work, but it’s worth it in the end, as friends work well together and are always there when someone needs a helping hand. I loved it!
