When Charity Ashlyn’s parents divorce, she learns that neither men nor relationships can be trusted. Initially Charity refuses to allow her father’s bad behavior to affect her future, but after she witnesses her first boyfriend Michael’s betrayal, her distrust of men has been cemented. In Coming Home, Charity meets her fair share of handsome men promising her the world, much of the time quite sincerely. Unfortunately, as Amapola shows us, even sincerity is no guarantee of a happily ever after. Charity goes through so much heartbreak it is a wonder that she has any strength to constantly rebuild her life and guard her heart. The loss she experiences over the years proves what a strong character she truly is.

Coming Home takes place over several decades, following the lives of both Charity and Michael as they lead separate but somewhat parallel lives. Eventually Michael and Charity find one another again and rekindle their friendship, much to the chagrin of Michael’s venomous and wildly jealous wife Samantha. Amapola creates characters that you care about and root for, whether it is sharing the excitement of 19- -year-old Eddie getting his first real job or following Bekka as she prepares for a job overseas. You wish them all the best and want to know more. At times, I was curious as to what the cheating Rupert was up to, but secretly I was hoping that his young mistress-cum-wife left him for a younger man!

There are some points throughout the story where the past and present tenses are mixed up, but it hardly takes away from the decades-long saga that is Coming Home. This is an emotional journey for Charity, but you will find the journey quite emotional for the reader as well.
