The Case of the Missing Socks is the first book in the Corduroy Jones and the Monsterville Mystery Squad series by Robert Hill. Corduroy Jones, or CJ, lives with his parents and dog Pepper in a Victorian house in the town of Monsterville. The town is named after its mysterious founder, but no one really believes in monsters. At least, the grownups don’t. When residents notice that socks are going missing -- it’s always just one sock of a pair, not both -- they call in CJ and his friends in the Monsterville Mystery Squad to investigate. Hampered at every turn by the inept police chief, the teenage sleuths manage to make contact with the monsters, who turn out not to be scary at all. In fact, they’re more scared of humans than humans are of them. Now the Monsterville Mystery Squad has a new task: to find a way that monsters can coexist with humans in the town.

The Case of the Missing Socks starts as a typical teenage detective story but quickly turns into something much more. Robert Hill has assembled a lively cast of characters. The Victorian houses with their unique appearances and idiosyncrasies are almost characters in their own right. The kids’ and Pepper’s interactions with the monsters are sure to inspire young readers, as the kids change their project from hunting monsters to protecting them. There are more mysteries to be solved in Monsterville, and I’m sure readers will also look forward to reading about them. Highly recommended.
