Courage in Capital City by NG Avant is, at its core, a romance. Yet, its plot and characters awaken us to the pressing social issues of violence against women and sex trafficking that are so relevant in today’s world. Calista Caldwell works in local government in Capital City and has seen firsthand the depths of corruption and depravity that are rife within the City’s law enforcement and political community. The love of her life, Seth, had been murdered by a corrupt fellow cop because Seth was determined to expose and prosecute those who would abuse their positions. Determined to see the guilty punished and to do something positive for battered women, in general, and Indigenous women, in particular, who were frequently being kidnapped, disappeared, and sex-trafficked, Calista decides she has to enter the very political system itself if she is to be instrumental in bringing about change.

Courage in Capital City presents a well-thought-out and intricate plot that encompasses both criminal cabals and civil servants prepared to sell their souls or sometimes look the other way to enhance their lifestyles, power, and domination over women. Although author NG Avant's book is fiction, it is easy to see the close correlation between the situation in rural Canada and its Indigenous women over the last century. The treatment of Indigenous children by the government and the apathy of law enforcement in investigating missing Indigenous women, as well as actual corruption within the authorities, is well known and is brought out beautifully in this narrative. The author has created a cast of intelligent, strong, self-motivated, and brave young women unprepared to accept the status quo any longer. Perfectly woven into this story of abuse, trafficking, and courageous fightback are a number of romantic arcs which soften the narrative, give a gentler tone, and remind us that even amidst the dirt and corruption, beauty, happiness, and love can always be found. I do love a nice romance read, but this story has more teeth and thought-provoking messages than most. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
