Several children are waiting to be adopted and are currently in the foster care system or living with families where a parent is unable to fully care for them. The beautiful picture book, Cousins by Adoption, written by Holly Marlow with colorful illustrations by Zoe Marlow (Holly’s six-year-old daughter), is seen through the eyes of a child. Children will learn about the wonderful experience and journey of adoption. Holly used her experiences in the adoption and foster care systems to help minimize the complications and emotional conflicts that can occur with these systems. Children will discover that there are different ways to obtain new additions to their families either through birth or being blessed through foster care or adoption. These methods begin with a Social Worker who must ensure that the potential parent has what it takes to give the child(ren) a quality home.
It was such an honor to read Cousins by Adoption by Holly Marlow. As a former Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for several years, I was able to see firsthand everything that goes on behind the scenes from preparing a child to be adopted and vetting the parent(s) to working to develop the ideal bond between all parties involved. This book is ideal for children because it gives a gentle approach to how the adoption process works along with the terms used. Additionally, if there are already children present in the home where the adopted child will be living, it is instrumental to include those children and prepare them for the new addition to the family. I loved how this book demonstrated the importance of this process to minimize a traumatic impact and establish a successful adoption. I am sure that your child will enjoy this book along with several of Holly’s other books especially written for children. Enjoy!
