Credible Dagger by Gregory Acuna is a suspense-filled novel about four students at the outbreak of World War II. Josef Kostinic is an American citizen with a Yugoslavian heritage who has gone to Belgrade to study history. Dick Vojovada is also American and he seems to be an intelligent man with secrets. Celeste Bowman is European, as is Penelope Mitchell. The four friends form a bond that will take them into the arms of danger and seal their friendship for years to come. When Belgrade is bombed, each goes his/her separate way. When the United States enters the war two years later, the four friends are scattered and none knows if any of the others survived the war. When reunited, they must make critical decisions of self-sacrifice in order to survive.
The development of Credible Dagger is intriguing. Author Acuna acquaints the reader with the individual progress of the four friends and then cleverly reunites them in intrigue, suspense and danger. Various intelligence agencies are involved in attempting to ascertain whether the Chetnick resistance leader Mihailovich or the partisan guerrillas are favorable to the interests of the Allies. In order to get this critical information, Joseph is sent to infiltrate the Chetnick movement. Celeste is trained in radio intelligence and Penelope works with the British Secret Service. Readers constantly wonder whatever happened to Dick when, suddenly, he factors into the story at a critical historical time. Author Acuna has done a superb bit of research which lends itself well to a moving plot of intrigue and courage. His characters are ordinary people who rise up to face extraordinary circumstances and the result is a wonderful read!
