What do you do when the mediocre life you've been living is no longer enough? Roy Tarantino decides to end said life by jumping off his apartment building, until a solitary scream dramatically changes the trajectory of his current plans. Crimes in Little Italy isn’t just about this lone loser Roy, but it is about the multitude of crimes that take place and how Roy fits into the story. Intent on saving the frightened woman whose scream saved him, Roy finds himself in the middle of what may or may not be a case of mistaken identity. Daniele Bondi does a good job with Roy’s character and setting the scene for the story. Questions about Roy’s sanity are woven throughout, adding an unexpected depth to this mystery.

Many of the characters in Crimes in Little Italy are stereotypical and one-dimensional as one would expect, and that’s okay. The Mafia boss is ruthless, cold and brutal as one would imagine a Mafia boss to be. There’s a henchman with a conscience tasked with the rape and there is the complex creature known as Laura. Catching more than one man’s eye, it is anyone’s guess who holds her fate in his hands. Daniele Bondi has created an interesting story full of contradictions, full of depth with many shallow characters that are mysterious yet straightforward. Roy is by far the most interesting and complex of the characters, giving him insight into these convoluted yet fully interconnected crimes. This story attempts to be more than it has to be, which works in some areas and does not in others. As a whodunit, it works wonderfully.
