Crows Calling by Bruce McConnell is a magical story told through the eyes of Koro, a wise and observant crow, and her animal friends living in Northern California. The book follows Koro and her team, including Ursula the bear and other creatures, as they try to help Grandmother Earth, who is struggling with the damage caused by humans. The story is filled with humor, heart, and a deep sense of connection to the land and its many inhabitants. Koro and her friends talk with humans, share their worries about the future, and encourage everyone to work together before time runs out. The book mixes Native American wisdom, playful animal voices, and a hopeful message about healing our relationship with nature. Readers will find themselves looking at the world in a new way, imagining what it would be like to hear the voices of animals and plants all around us.
Bruce McConnell’s writing is gentle, poetic, and full of warmth. The plot moves smoothly, with each character’s voice bringing something special to the story. The pace is steady and thoughtful, giving readers time to reflect on the big ideas. There’s plenty of action—animal meetings, journeys through forests, and conversations with humans—but the real excitement comes from the characters’ inner lives and the choices they make. Koro, Ursula, and the humans feel real and memorable, each with their strengths and struggles. The themes of kindness, responsibility, and hope for the planet are woven in naturally, making the book both inspiring and comforting. As someone who loves stories about animals and nature, I found myself smiling at the clever dialogue and feeling moved by the book’s gentle wisdom. Crows Calling is a rare book that invites us to listen to the world around us.
